The Inaugural Speech
Posted on Thursday, February 17th, 2011 at 12:00 pmAs much as I hate to write up one of those unoriginal introductory posts, here is my unoriginal introductory post:
I’m in my late twenties, live and work in St. Louis and have been a fairly serious vegan for about a year and a half. This came on the heels of several years of vegetarianism and I’ve generally found it to be a really great way of life. I like to talk about vegan cooking, earnest attempts at vegan cooking, the vegan lifestyle and anything else that might be relative – and I figured it was about time to give my husband a break. (Just kidding! He’s very supportive!)
Anyway, I’m hoping this can be a place to share some of what I’ve learned and why I bother with friends, family and anyone else who might be interested (or bewildered, as is sometimes the case). I invite you to poke around a bit to find out more about my point of view and some of the basic principles of veganism. I look forward to trading stories, recipes, ideas, opinions and maybe even a few tips and tricks of the trade with you!

Inaugural comment!
Congrats on the blog… but what about protein and calcium… those come from cows pretty much, right?
My first comment! SO excited!!
Well James, I’m going to pretend like I don’t know that you already know the answer to this question
The short answer is: definitely not! Head on over to the FAQS page to get the rundown on protein, calcium and all kinds of other great info about some of the common misconceptions.
Actually, James, there are many ways to get protein and calcium from non-animal products. For protein, items such as a wide variety of beans, oats, nuts, spinach, natural peanut butter, sunflower seeds, soy milk and soy products…the list goes on
For calcium, there are great calcium fortified soy milk options as well as broccoli, tofu and more. It’s always great to take a nature and animal friendly multivitamin to ensure your daily intake as well. Great first post – look forward to more!
Kelsey,
I LOVE it! A lot of people do not know much about vegans and therefore would rather oppose it. You are doing a great thing by putting the facts out there and helping those who are vegan. Although many people may chastise you for your decision, I think what you are doing is noble and I am very proud of you that you would stand up for what you believe in.
Congrats!
Thanks, Jen. That means a lot
